SeattleServer.com uses a custom spam-filtering configuration combining Spamhaus blacklists and Spamassassin's rule-based techniques with the excellent DSpam bayesian engine. The spam filtering system will work fairly well without any work on your part, and will become more effective with time, however it is recommended for maximal effectiveness and to ensure against false positives that you train the system using the following instructions.
"Train?" you ask? The advanced bayesian filter we use to recognize spam is a form of artificial intelligence. By telling it which E-mail it has recognized incorrectly (for example Spam that has made it to your Inbox), it will learn to be more accurate. So if you take the time to follow these simple instructions, you will in time see no spam coming in, and no legitimate E-mail being filtered.
Our system filters E-Mail recognized as spam into a folder called Spam/Filtered, which you can see by logging into webmail at http://webmail.yourdomain.com, or an IMAP mail client. If you opt to use the deprecated POP3 method to retrieve your mail, you will need to log in to the webmail system BEFORE downloading your mail into your mail client.
Mails in the Spam/Filtered folder are automatically expunged after 7 days, so if you are concerned about missing any legitimate mail, you should browse through this folder at least once a week to ensure nothing legitimate has been filtered, until you are confident that the system has been sufficiently trained not to falsely recognize legitimate mail as spam. It is unlikely that any legitimate mail will be filtered, however. It is safe to delete all of the messages from this folder as often as you wish (for example if you wish to browse through it and empty it once or twice a day).
What to do if legitimate mail is erroneously filtered: Should you discover a legitimate mail in the Spam/Filtered folder, move it to the Spam/Not Spam folder, and within a minute or two, the system will learn from it's mistake, and then move the mail to your Inbox.
What to do if you receive spam in your Inbox: Should you receive any unwanted spam messages in your Inbox, you may move them to the Spam (note: not Spam/Filtered) folder, and within a minute or two, the system will learn to recognize future mails similar to that as spam, and will move it to the Spam/Filtered folder (you can then delete it from there if you please).
You can empty your Spam/Filtered folder any time you like. This will help keep your mail box uncluttered so that it is easy to find any legitimate messages.
